Five for Friday

Thanks to the Australia Writer's Centre Best Blogs competition, I've discovered a new travel website. Time Travel Turtle. This is what I wish I could do with my life!
I love this; the Australia Christian Lobby did not renew their domain name, so it was bought by the Australian Cat Ladies. You really must check out their values. I think the logo should give you an idea.

Politeness reinforcement - does anyone else believe in this? Personally, I have made people move their bags so I could sit down on trains. Makes me feel righteous.

Fantasy holiday homes. I have an important birthday coming up next year, maybe this could be an excuse to splash out

Casa Passerini in Tuscany Italy, one of the properties on Hosted Villas.

And finally - Joffrey Bieber. Uncanny.

Five for Friday

This week Embassy Bar is re-opening as the CBD's first craft beer bar. Is this a little unbelievable to any other local Brisbane-ites?

A cooking couple’s 100 rules of dinner. Some fun, some practical but worth a read for those of you who enjoying cooking. Also a great cooking blog, if you're in to that sort of thing.

Some example 'rules':
  • 18. Kitchen chairs should be red. Or at least fun.
  • 59. When cooking steak on the grill, get a nice char over hot coals and then move it to a less hot part of the grill — i.e. over indirect heat. Test for doneness by pressing down on the meat with your finger. When it’s ready, it will have the consistency of the flesh at the base of your thumb. Once it’s firm, you have overcooked it.
  • 77. If you cook dinner for someone, and that person is not super forthcoming with his or her expressions of happiness or gratitude, you must (a) fight every urge to ask them if they like it, and (b) think twice about cooking for that person again.

The home made gin kit. Otherwise known as the perfect gift for any of my friends.

Reasons my son is crying. Incredibly un-PC perhaps but after a while also very funny!

World's most colourful cities. I want to visit them all.

My new favourite tumblr: Des Hommes et des Chatons

I was going to wait and put this in Five for Friday but I can't wait that long to share!

Des Hommes et des Chatons.

As you can see, too many good images to choose from, so I went a little crazy.

Yes, I am going to turn in to a scary old cat lady. And I'm ok with that.

My zombie apocalypse team

Flicking through a tumblr, I found this little image and loved the stream of comments that came after it.

I immediately started thinking about who mine would be, so here is the list;

  • Hunger Games Trilogy - Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mallark
  • David Attenborough's Africa - David Attenborough

and then either

  • Ruddy Gore (One of the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries novel) - Phryne Fisher
OR
  • Elementary - Sherlock Holmes and Dr Joan Watson

I think I'd be pretty ok in a Zombie apocalypse. In fact, I suspect I'd be the weakest member in the team and therefore the most likely to be sacrificed first as superfluous. After all, my only real skills are making strange inappropriate comments, folding fitted sheets and as a potential baby-incubator. Only one of those is really useful in an apocalypse.

Five for Friday

First big announcement, one of my favourite people has made a return to blogging! Another Brisbane local girl, she and her own blog partner talk about 20-something life, bars, beauty, fashion and fun on Adventures In Colour.

Do we need a new punctuation mark?

It's not often that I genuinely lust after an H&M collection, though I do desperately wish we had the chain here in Australia, but this collection, I WANT!

I adore discovering new, accessible food blogs and here is Tales of a Truffle Pig. Sure, the writer is based out of Sydney but she posts about food and eating all over the country and even from Brisbane, I can enjoy her opinions on beer and recipes for zucchini and bacon slice!

Jennifer Lawrence is tied with Emma Stone and Meryl Streep as the person I want most to play me in a movie about my life. So this week I was thrilled to not only discover a new sarcastic gifs tumblr, but one that went nuts with Jennifer Lawrence gifs post-oscars. She's known for being rad in interviews, so there is an internet-library of potential material.

Read about the Think, Eat, Save Campaign

Andrew Davies, the man who adapted the beloved 1996 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice is adapting War and Peace. Any other classic adaptation nerds out there excited by this one?

New bar opening on Caxton Street. For those of us who like to be a little bit classy pre-game.

Vintage couples in love. Not sure I will ever get a couple-photo charming enough to be found in a list like this.

And some website hilarity for my friend Sarah - You had one job to do.

London Fashion Week: Ready to Wear Spring 2013

London Fashion week wrapped up yesterday so I’m a little more on the ball with this one than I was with New York

The huge hit of the week seems to have been Burberry Prorsum, that ultra-British label who showed a glorious rainbow of colours, right to a finale of metallic trench coats that have ‘must-have-instant-classic’ written all over them. In direct contrast, Mulberry was muted. For the most part though, the collection screamed bright and wonderful English summer. All colour, glorious colour.

If you want to go one place to check out London Fashion Week I say go to Vogue UK – or any of the other major fashion mag UK editions like Harpers Bazaar. But do so soon – Milan Fashion week is already underway and it might be almost overnight that Matthew Williamson is replaced by Dolce & Gabbana.

My absolute favourite was Temperley London.

For some fashion wrap ups, you can check out The Guardian, full photo shoots of the 103 catwalk shows on Vogue or there is of course the official London Fashion Week website.

Street style on just about any fashion website in the world, but a few here at either Jak and Jil or Tommy Ton's tumblr, Harpers or Stylist UK.

The beginning and the end of Harry Potter

I found this on a tumblr and just had to share it, even though I don't have a tumblr account and have no intention of getting one.

The first and last lines of each Harry Potter novel.

A fun crowd sourcing project on international pronunciation of one simple phrase.

A saucy Victorian pop-up book for adults only.

The only person to make physics and maths entertaining to me - the guy behind XKCD - has started a blog answering questions about physics. SAT Guessing. There are also cartoons.

A dining table that makes every meal fun. Yes, I do kind of want one.

Classic Gil Elvgren pin-ups given a Robert Downey Jnr make-over.

Five for Friday no. 27

I desperately want one of these travel bags from Sweden covered in Josef Frank designs, which I adore.

Perfectly Timed Photos. Only look if you have an hour to spare because you WILL get sucked in.

Things I saw and liked – a new tumblr I follow.

Target have released the next list of designer collaborations and it is some list. It really depresses me that most of this will never see Australian shores, but one can hope.

Local Brisbane fashion blogger Professor Barbie on dressing for that job interview. Plus, I like discovering local bloggers.

I love this. The Satorialist for the Edwardian era.

Five Words Tell A Story.

I spotted this quote, it appears on Wood Paneled Shoes and I had to feature it somewhere. 100% accurate.

And because there is a little bit of wedding-fever going around my lady friends at the moment: Vera Wang have opened their first bridal boutique in Australia.

The website history game

This is going to sound weird but as you would all know, your browser saves your web history. And a scurrilous thing it is too. I don’t need to see just how often I look at trashy celebrity fashion websites.

That aside, I have recently developed a new habit utilising that dastardly search history. Into the address bar I type one letter – a random letter of the alphabet – and see what websites pop up from my history. So I choose ‘D’ and the first two options are a couple of tumblrs. I choose ‘C’ and it’s A Cup of Jo, a blog I look at all the time. ‘X’ of course brings up XKCD.

Comic courtesy of XKCD. If you don't read it you're missing out on very important pop culture.

It also varies on whether I’m at home or work. My home computer has so many more options; 'E' is for Entwined Happiness, 'R' is for Fuck Yeah, Parks and Recreation, and 'V' brings up a plethora of websites with the word 'Vintage' in the title; Posh Girl Vintage, Heartbreaker Fashion and then Vogue.

Sounds like a weird habit, doesn’t it? Bet you’re going to try it now though, just to see what your computer remembers about you.

The walk of shame

I spotted this photo on Modern Hepburn and it instantly made me think of walks of shame. Though it is a beautiful photo, to me it is kind of a walk-of-sham nightmare. Waking up somewhere and either having to bolt as quickly as possible or else having lost your clothes into the night and so wrapping a sheet around yourself and going out into the world before too many people can wake up and see you.

We’ve all done a walk of shame or two, correct? If you haven’t, you’ve missed out. As far as I am concerned, the walk of shame isn’t shameful at all. In my experience, it is the final step in a spectacular night out.
