Five for Friday

Happy Friday everyone! It is a particularly splendid day for me because I spontaneously was given a day off, so I am off to the Sunshine Coast to eat, drink and be merry.
Still, a five-for-Friday;

Scientific 7 minute work out. Even I could manage that.

Mr and Mrs Smith; luxury and boutique hotels. I can't afford any of these but a girl can dream. And drool a little in hopeful anticipation.

And on a more sobering note;

Excellent analysis by Time on our costly and ineffectual asylum-seeker policy.

Neil Gaiman on entitlement issues; namely fans expecting George R. R. Martin to produce his next book immediately.

Some of the world's amazing places.

Charming artwork and obscure words.

Frank Warren, 'the most trusted strange in the world' is the keeper of post secret. Started out as a spontaneous project, people from all over the world tell him their secrets. He now posts them anonymously, of course, on his website Post Secret. The secrets we can never tell can be told to him. Read more on Mamma Mia.

Five for Friday

The Australian Writers Centre runs an annual competition to find Australia's best blogs. See the 25 finalists on the AWC website, and vote for a winner!

Are we all enjoying watching the world gear-up for The Great Gatsby? Again? The fashion world is of course swinging in 20's revival. Brooks Brothers, along with Prada have released a Gatsby-inspired collection. Brooks were responsible for the mens' costuming and I for one and not ashamed to admit that I would melt for a man in this tailoring.

I kind of want to do this 5 minute DIY, thanks to Frankie Magazine.

Five for Friday

Well, this just seems wrong.

The suspended coffee movement in Brisbane.

A smartphone app for Melbourne bars and pubs. Because every person I know enjoys indulging in Melbourne's nightlife.

The Vintage Dress Company. A New Zealand Company started by a former flight attendant with an eye for delightful vintage fabrics.

Sedating children on long-haul flights; this will sound un-PC but I approve. Parenting blogs explode at 'near child-abuse' but parents who have ever taken a child on a long-haul flight think it's the ideal solution. Read one mother's account here.

I took a lot of long flights myself as a child and I think I was ok but with every landing, my ears would hurt so much from the pressure that I would scream at the top of my lungs. If I had been gently sedated, the whole experience would have been much less traumatic for myself, my parents and the rest of the plane.
On the flip side, I have been on flights with screaming, chair-kicking, running down the aisle, peek-a-boo playing children and I just want them to sit in their damn chairs and shut up.

Honestly, I'd sedate myself on long-haul flights if I knew which drugs to use.

Great Challenges in Global Health is calling for submission to develop the next generation of condom. Because let's face it, there hasn't been a whole lot of technological improvement there for some 400 years. The project is receiving financial support from the Bill Gates Foundation. I just thought this was interesting. Your awareness has been raised this Friday!

Kevin McCloud has a Pinterest page. For any other Grand Design freaks out there. Seriously is a great show to have on while cooking dinner, though.

Brisbane City Council City Centre MasterPlan Ideas Fiesta. A three-week long program of free public events.

A website has done a list of their favourite DIY fashion bloggers and posts. The post itself isn't great but you can look through the websites and projects and find some great new blogs and ideas. Personally, I loved this one on ...love Maegan. I wish I'd seen this months ago, I might have tried this to have one 'neon' item in my wardrobe.

Five for Friday

First big announcement, one of my favourite people has made a return to blogging! Another Brisbane local girl, she and her own blog partner talk about 20-something life, bars, beauty, fashion and fun on Adventures In Colour.

Do we need a new punctuation mark?

It's not often that I genuinely lust after an H&M collection, though I do desperately wish we had the chain here in Australia, but this collection, I WANT!

I adore discovering new, accessible food blogs and here is Tales of a Truffle Pig. Sure, the writer is based out of Sydney but she posts about food and eating all over the country and even from Brisbane, I can enjoy her opinions on beer and recipes for zucchini and bacon slice!

Jennifer Lawrence is tied with Emma Stone and Meryl Streep as the person I want most to play me in a movie about my life. So this week I was thrilled to not only discover a new sarcastic gifs tumblr, but one that went nuts with Jennifer Lawrence gifs post-oscars. She's known for being rad in interviews, so there is an internet-library of potential material.

Read about the Think, Eat, Save Campaign

Andrew Davies, the man who adapted the beloved 1996 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice is adapting War and Peace. Any other classic adaptation nerds out there excited by this one?

New bar opening on Caxton Street. For those of us who like to be a little bit classy pre-game.

Vintage couples in love. Not sure I will ever get a couple-photo charming enough to be found in a list like this.

And some website hilarity for my friend Sarah - You had one job to do.

Five for Friday no. 56

It was Valentine's Day earlier this week but not everyone gets the love they deserve. In the UK, there is controversy surrounding reports that staff at a home for disabled people procured sex workers for the residents at their request. I don't know how you may feel about this, but I think every person has the right to sexual experiences and there is nothing unnatural in those desires. If these people cannot find partners, then to engage professional sex workers, who will be understanding of their needs, to help them seems the obvious and correct solution. Read the story in The Guardian.

Nine illustrious houses in English fiction. This is just real estate envy.

20 mostly cute, some odd, ways to announce your pregnancy. This is how my friend Rachael did it.

Restaurants clamping down on people photographing their food. It was inevitable. Has this ever happened to you? It happen to me the one and only time I ate at Esquire.

Five for Friday no. 55

She killed at Superbowl earlier this week: Beyonce has a blog. It's free like blogs should be but you need to sign up for it, which I just don't care enough to do. But I am intrigued, so could someone else sign up and let me know?

6 myths about travel that cost you money.

Bean Hunter website. Reviews coffee and cafes all over the world. And yes, they do have an app for that shit.

A small list of ways you can help with the flood recovery effort across Queensland:

11 life lessons from Liz Lemon

This week is the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my favourite books ever. Here is a little look back on 200 years of book covers. I still cling to the 1995 BBC adaptation and have never seen the 2005 film adaption. The trailer made me nauseous.

Mean Girls: the Musical is in development.

The Federal Election has been announced for 14 September 2013. That makes the campaign 227 days in length. Can we, as a collective nation, stand that much campaigning? I doubt it. But it does give me a link to share this photo of PM Julia Gillard, which she posted herself on twitter. I'm not a huge Gillard fan (though I loathe Tony Abbott) but I like seeing little things like this that are humanising of our politicians and public figures.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, one person's 16 reasons you shouldn't vote for Abbott.
